My very first VTuber model was ME in 3D. The main reason I started VTubing was that I didn’t want my face shown on screen, although people already knew what I looked like. The problem was that getting ready takes time. My mind was all set on making content—I did not want to spend time doing hair and makeup. I found a free 3D model builder—not available anymore—that I used to build a model that looked close to my IRL face and body, and I called it DAIKO CHAN—Japanese for “substitute self.” So, when I started around 2018, the choice of VTubing for me was just a matter of timesaving. No makeup was needed—I could get straight out of bed and have the model work for me, which also saved me from getting judged for my looks. But using this model, I gradually realized that I was making a character, that DAIKO CHAN was no longer simply my substitute. So I decided to make a whole new character separate from myself to be a full-fledged VTuber, and that was when SOUCHOU debuted as a delinquent in 2021. Now Kson SOUCHOU is separate from IRL Kson, but my work as a VTuber has just one purpose that has never changed: having fun!

Could I say... that I just love playing games? In my childhood, I was never allowed to play games—typical Asian parents (laughs)—so my gaming experience started very late. I was never allowed to have a hobby—anything besides studying was a sin!—but thanks, Mom! Looks like I studied hard enough to somehow make a living out of those sins! The motivation clearly comes from my inner delinquency towards my parents! Grrrrr!

My 3D model is me, but not me. SOUCHOU has the delinquent side I’ve always wanted and does whatever she wants while I support her IRL. It’s not easy for people to instantly change how they react or communicate with others. In fact, it was impossible for me. Not that I don’t like myself as “me,” but a delinquent was something I’d always wished to be. It’s kind of weird to say, but I consider myself super nice—sometimes too nice. I can’t stop trying to please everyone. But when I’m in my 3D model as SOUCHOU, it’s very easy for me to change... or act as another character—the character I’ve always wanted to be!

As for the sitting and standing rig, Himono-sensei, who rigged my very first SOUCHOU model, wanted to challenge herself by making SOUCHOU squat. When I commissioned her and my mama (yaman**-sensei) I remember telling them I wanted a sitting model—since VTubers rarely reveal their bottom half when they stream. I wanted my model to rest peacefully, partially offscreen instead of standing stiffly. Himono-sensei told me she could make standing art sit with toggles, but she had never done that before, and thus didn’t know how much time it would take. I told her to take as much time as she needed. Then I paid her in advance and just waited... I’m not primarily responsible for the success of the art and rigging. Mostly it’s the effort of the artists when it comes to models and rigs. Thankfully, the artists took my work very seriously. I respect every artist in this VTubing industry. They are the true heroes behind the scenes—because VTubers cannot exist without them.

Friends

I have to say this first: I was never good at making friends in my childhood. My family had to move a lot due to my father’s work, so I never had a “homie.” I grew up in so many places, I don’t even know what I’d say if I was ever asked where my hometown is. So when I started making content on the internet, I wasn’t expecting to make any friends. As my follower count grew, I did have people approaching me with bad intentions, sniffing for money or fame. With my lack of communication skills, I fell for all of them. People often tell me that I’m super rich or something… You do not want to know how much I’ve lost through fraud, how many times I’ve been lied to by a “friend.” I think I’ve sacrificed a lot to learn that, here on the internet, you have to be very smart to survive. The friends I have now are the ones who stayed with me, helped me through all my ups and downs. Sometimes people judge me for the relationships I have, but I’ve learned repeatedly from my experiences that social image and appearance mean nothing when it comes to friendships. VTuber or not, my friends are my friends forever, and I’m very thankful for all the people in this industry who taught me those lessons. I want my money back, though. (laughs)
