SZA’s album SOS held onto number one for its second consecutive week on the strength of SOS Deluxe: LANA, which dropped on December 20. Combined with the original release of the album, which spent 10 weeks at number one earlier last year, the two versions have now spent a combined 12 weeks atop the chart. It’s the longest for an R&B album by a female artist since Whitney Houston’s debut album spent 14 weeks at number one in 1986. Weekly sales totaled 130,000 units, marking a 27% decline from the previous week, the bulk of which was made up by 166.3 million streams, or 125,000 units. SOS also snagged number one on the Top Streaming Albums chart.
This week’s chart period spanned December 27 through January 2, or in other words, the period immediately following Christmas. As holiday streaming went into sharp decline, the usual holiday albums fell out from the top 100 of the Billboard 200 entirely. Just the previous week, they made up six of the top 10 and 32 of the top 100. The chart now appears to be returning to its pre-holiday season state. The top five’s once again populated with some familiar names, with numbers two through five taken up by Kendrick Lamar’s GNX (up from number five the previous week), Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet (up from 12), the Wicked soundtrack (up from eight), and Billie Eilish’s HIT ME HARD AND SOFT (up from 14).
Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ duet “Die With a Smile” finally climbed all the way to the top of the chart. First released on August 16 last year, the song became massively popular and debuted at number three on the chart by the end of the month. But between Shaboozey’s single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” dominating the chart with a historic run at number one between mid-July and November, and the wave of holiday hits that followed in December, “Die With a Smile” was relegated to number two for 19 whole weeks. The song nonetheless held its position as the highest-charting non-holiday song throughout the season and rose at last to the top in its 20th week. This marks the longest climb to number one since the Teddy Swims’ song “Lose Control” took 32 weeks last March.
Weekly streams totaled 27.1 million, placing “Die With a Smile” at number one on the Streaming Songs chart for the first time as well. It was also number two on the Radio Songs chart and number four on Digital Song Sales. The single is Gaga’s sixth number-one hit after scoring two in the 2000s, two more in the 2010s, and now another two in the 2020s. She joins Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson as the only other artist in history to have at least two number-one songs in three different decades. Michael had two in the 1970s, nine in the 1980s, and two in the 1990s, while Janet scored two in the 1980s, six in the 1990s, and two in the 2000s. All this points to sustained popularity and consistent, top-tier career longevity rather than one-hit-wonder or quick-to-fizzle status. “Die With a Smile” is also the ninth number one for Mars, who’s spent a total of 35 weeks at number one, placing him 10th overall. That makes him the artist with the 10th most number of weeks at the top overall, just behind Taylor Swift (36 weeks) and Michael Jackson (37 weeks).
Much like on the Billboard 200, the close of the holiday season caused a flurry of holiday staples, which had dominated the top 16, to be swept away off the chart. Of its 100 songs, 38 were returning after an absence and seven were freshly debuted. ROSÉ and Bruno Mars’ own duet “APT.” soared from number 34 last week to number five, achieving its highest position since it debuted at number eight back in November. This marks not only the first top 10 for a female K-pop artist but also the first top five. The single is number four in streams, three in digital sales, and 14 for airplay. “APT.” also returned to number one on both the Global 200 and the Global Excl. US charts, marking its 10th week overall at number one. It’s the fifth song in Global 200 history to spend 10 or more weeks at the top, following Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” (19 weeks), Harry Styles’ “As It Was” (15 weeks), Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” (13 weeks), and the Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber’s “STAY” (11 weeks).
Best New Artist for the 2025 Grammys just may be one of the most competitive in years. Nominees include not only newcomers but also artists with top-tier or historic achievements: Shaboozey spent 19 weeks at number one on the Hot 100, Sabrina Carpenter released hit after hit all year, Teddy Swims had the Hot 100 number-one song of 2024, Chappell Roan took home the MTV VMA for Best New Artist, RAYE won the BRIT Award for British Album of the Year, and Benson Boone put out “Beautiful Things.” And then, of course, there’s Doechii.
Doechii might be the most fitting nominee for Best New Artist as she’s reached new highs and is poised for even greater success in 2025. This week, her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal climbed to a new peak of number 69 on the Billboard 200, while the track “DENIAL IS A RIVER” rose to the very top of the Bubbling Under Hot 100. A mixtape? Yes. Doechii has yet to release a proper studio album, opting instead to release three mixtapes since starting out in 2016. She’s the most prominent rising star of her kind since Chance the Rapper, who earned seven Grammy nominations in 2017, including Best New Artist, and won three without having released a single studio album, thanks to his mixtape Coloring Book.
Doechii really started to turn heads in 2021 when her song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” went viral on TikTok, leading to her signing a record deal. In 2023, her focus shifted away slightly from rapping and more toward her singing, and her single “What It Is” featuring Kodak Black climbed to number 29 on the Hot 100, giving Doechii her first top-40 hit. As she continued to build up momentum as one of the next big women in rapping, she cemented her reputation with the release of Alligator Bites Never Heal. The mixtape received widespread acclaim, ranking ninth on Rolling Stone’s list of 2024’s best albums and scoring similarly well on numerous other yearly roundups. She raised her profile even further by featuring on “I’M HIS, HE’S MINE,” a track off Katy Perry’s comeback album 143, as well as “Balloon” off Tyler, The Creator’s hit album CHROMAKOPIA. The recent release of the “DENIAL IS A RIVER” music video sent waves across social media, with even SZA and Billie Eilish weighing in. Doechii is currently nominated for three Grammys: Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, and Best Rap Performance. “DENIAL IS A RIVER” and “NISSAN ALTIMA,” two of the highlights off her latest mixtape, are right on the verge of entering the Hot 100, proving she’s only just begun her historic rise.
ROSÉ and Bruno Mars’ duet “APT.” is at number five on the Hot 100, number four on Streaming Songs, number three on Digital Song Sales, and number 14 on Radio Songs. It also tops both the Global 200 and Global Excl. US charts. ROSÉ’s album rosie is at number 12 on the Billboard 200, number 17 on Top Streaming Albums, and number six on Top Album Sales. The BLACKPINK member is now number 22 on the Artist 100.
Jimin’s album MUSE is at number 106 on the Billboard 200. His song “Who” returns to the Hot 100 at number 24 and is also number 13 in streaming and number 10 on the Global 200. The BTS member returns to the Artist 100 as well, now at number 86.
The Stray Kids mixtape HOP is at number 13 on the Billboard 200 and has reigned atop the Top Album Sales chart for three consecutive weeks. The group is at number 18 on the Artist 100.
TWICE’s 14th mini album, STRATEGY, is at number 122 on the Billboard 200 and number nine on Top Album Sales, while TWICE themselves are at number 75 on the Artist 100.
ROMANCE: UNTOLD by ENHYPEN is at number 154 on the Billboard 200 and number 13 on Top Album Sales. ENHYPEN returns to the Artist 100 at number 87.
j-hope’s track “Blue Side (Outro)” debuts at number 13 on Digital Song Sales.
Returning to the Top Album Sales chart are TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s EP The Star Chapter: SANCTUARY at number 29, SEVENTEEN’s 12th mini album SPILL THE FEELS at number 30, and ATEEZ’s EP GOLDEN HOUR: Part 2 at number 35.
On the Heatseekers Albums chart, KATSEYE’s EP SIS (Soft Is Strong) is at number eight.
On the Emerging Artists chart, ILLIT is at number 12, KATSEYE is at number 23, and NCT DREAM is at number 40.
