A place often remains embedded in our sense of identity like a set of coordinates: where we were born, where we grew up, where we spent the most time, or simply where our deepest memories reside. The measure is different for everyone, but sometimes a place becomes the perfect reference point for explaining who we are. For NCT 127, that place is Seoul. NCT 127 was the first to give concrete form to the idea of a unit rooted in a particular region among the group. Named for Seoul’s longitude of 127 degrees east, they debuted as NCT’s first location-based unit. Yet over the past decade, they have traveled farther than any other. With Seoul as their home base, NCT 127 have crisscrossed stages across America, Europe, and Asia, steadily extending their reach around the world.

At the same time, their experimental, unconventional approach to music and performance came to define the essence of what it meant to be “neo.” In many ways, it resembled Seoul itself: neon signs casting their riotous glow; traces of the past layered with visions of the future. Other cities have their own versions of Seoul’s light and noise, its speed and density. But the particular layers of time that have accumulated in Seoul – and the sensation created by their collision — cannot simply be transplanted elsewhere. The same is true of NCT 127’s “neo” identity. Unfamiliar sounds and unconventional structures are no longer simply stylistic devices; over time, they have become a distinct musical grammar that is unmistakably their own. Seoul, then, is both the point from which to measure how far they have traveled and the indelible core of their identity.

Now, a decade on, NCT’s system of limitless expansion has come to an end, while NCT 127’s lineup has undergone changes of its own. At this juncture, what they place front and center on their seventh studio album, “BLINGY,” is neither a new world nor a new city. It is their identity and their point of origin: Seoul.

They call it neo-standard
The music on “BLINGY” is less experimental than NCT 127’s earlier work. That is not to say the album is narrow in scope. Rather, it draws on familiar genre elements and rearranges them within the musical grammar the group has developed over the past decade. Instead of writing new rules, NCT 127 reaffirm the ones they have spent the last ten years creating. Ultimately, the question “BLINGY” poses is less about novelty than identity: What makes NCT 127 sound like NCT 127? Their answer is in the music itself.

Hip-hop has always been at the core of NCT 127’s music. Over that foundation, they have layered EDM, distorted synths and bass, and, at times, unconventional textures, forging an abrasive, maximalist sound all their own. Elsewhere, they have laid sharp electronic tones over ’90s hip-hop grooves, setting the musical vocabulary of the past against futuristic production. Different rhythms and eras collide, bringing multiple moments in musical time into the same present.

The title track “Blingy” draws on rage and dubstep, while “Step Up” reaches back to ’90s old-school hip-hop and “Day After Day” pulls from hypertrap and Jersey club. “Piñata” moves between rock and hip-hop, while “Getaway” and “127 Million Miles” turn to indie pop and pop rock, respectively, cooling the temperature of an otherwise feverish album. Genres born in different eras coexist here in the present tense. And there is something distinctly Seoul-like in the way ’90s hip-hop and retro synths, dubstep and rage, hypertrap and Jersey club all cohere within a single album: past and future occupying the same frame.

This parallel comes into sharper focus in the lyrics, nowhere more explicitly than on “Legacy.” Invoking the Han River, Namsan, and Hangang-daero, the song maps itself onto the landscape of Seoul, its flashes of “neon” and “green light” evoking both the city at night and NCT’s signature color. “Following the green light, Namsan shines bright,” while “green light” floods Hangang-daero. As the lyric “a future that becomes light, following our footsteps” suggests, Seoul is more than the backdrop to NCT 127’s beginnings. It is where their story has accumulated, with new traces still to be layered upon it.

The force behind the expansion
Invoking Seoul as an assertion of identity does not mean that NCT 127 are converging on a single point. “BLINGY” is emphatically about expansion. What has changed is how that expansion works: not through the proliferation once promised by NCT’s “limitless expansion,” but through transmission. On “Legacy,” NCT 127 assert Seoul as their home base even as they declare, “Plotting our coordinates, we worldwide.” “Day After Day,” meanwhile, affirms that every moment they have lived and every version of themselves they have been has shaped who they are today — and that those moments continue to reverberate in the present. NCT 127 do not simply reaffirm their identity; they keep extending its reach.

Nor does that expansion move in only one direction. On “Blingy,” the listener’s voice is “a little spark,” the point from which light begins. Again and again, NCT 127 call for a response: “Say my name even louder” on “Piñata,” or “Let the night echo / Shout out loud” on “Step Up.” They send out sound and energy; the voices and lights that answer them send that energy back, amplifying it in turn. Rising from different coordinates, those responses cross physical distances to create “the world washed in shades of green” on “127 Million Miles.”

Ultimately, it is the fandom that makes this dynamic of expansion possible. The sounds and memories that begin at the fixed coordinate of Seoul travel with fans around the world, where they are sung, played, and experienced anew, extending NCT 127’s radius. Fans sing along to the songs, remember the performances, and share those experiences in their own languages and in their own ways, leaving traces of NCT 127 at new coordinates. It is through them that NCT 127’s reach continues to expand.

Crucially, none of this makes Seoul fade as the point of origin. If anything, the more people around the world come to share the same name and music, the more clearly NCT 127’s beginnings in Seoul come into focus. A single voice that began in Seoul travels through countless responses, becoming a new memory in each place it reaches. Those scattered memories, in turn, point back toward a single coordinate: NCT 127.

Much of what makes up NCT 127 has changed over the course of a decade. “BLINGY” is not an album interested in celebrating how far they have come or how much they have achieved. It is an album about identifying what, through all that change, continues to make NCT 127 NCT 127. What remains after ten years? How does what remains carry them into tomorrow? What makes NCT 127 who they are? They know exactly where the answer lies.
