“Can’t change the weather, then let’s chase the lightning.” This is the narration from the first track, “Chasing Lightning,” on LE SSERAFIM’s new album CRAZY. Just as we can’t change the weather, we can’t alter things outside of ourselves or the circumstances around us. Instead, we can choose to “chase” what we desire within those constraints. This determination shifts the members’ mindset. At the start of the song, even when they felt like, “I miss my puppy so much,” they would tell themselves, “You’ll see him when you’re free, we’ve got more important things to do.” But now, they say, “Go for it, no matter how things are,” and sing, “Don’t hesitate, follow your racing heart.” This is what LE SSERAFIM’s CRAZY looks like. “Going crazy means, you believe in what you love.”

“(Galileo) I put myself on trial, every day.” People might call those who chase lightning mad, much like Galileo Galilei, who proclaimed truths contrary to the knowledge the world believed. The title track of the album, “CRAZY,” is also a story of LE SSERAFIM believing in their own choices, just as Galileo did. Although “(In my brain) I was told to go moderately crazy,” the quintet says, “I don't know the 6 W’s, dammit,” and ultimately chooses to go crazy, singing, “My answer is ‘make me super CRAZY’,” while dismissing “What it means, what it’s worth, what it can and can’t do,” by “Hush now.” In “Pierrot,” where they sing, “Like psychos through the rain we run” and in “1-800-hot-n-fun,” where they say, “I’m not tryna leave until they kick us to the road,” they demonstrate a determination to live as they wish in any situation. Being crazy, in essence, seems to be about living according to one’s desires. However, it’s also about overcoming the limitations of environments that are out of one’s control, much like ignoring the gaze of others when standing apart from the norm as Galileo Galilei did, by telling all those gazes to “Hush now.” If you can't change the weather, you change yourself. And then, you chase the lightning. In a “hot-n-fun” way.

The performance of “CRAZY” utilizes voguing to visually convey what LE SSERAFIM’s “CRAZY” is all about. While the performance of their previous album’s title track, “EASY,” made a challenging choreography look effortless, the performance of “CRAZY” is playful and relaxed. The members are smiling throughout the performance, shaking their upper bodies as if brushing off the dust to the rhythm that goes “Da da da da,” and repeatedly lifting their legs to tap them with their hands. They casually brush off obstacles with a few hand gestures, moving forward with ease. Even on rainy days or during tough times, they live with a relaxed attitude, laughing and shaking off whatever comes their way. The performance of “CRAZY” mirrors LE SSERAFIM’s portrayal in the CRAZY TRAILER “Chasing Lightning,” where they remain relaxed and walk undisturbed, even amidst a world filled with fighting and shouting. It’s about going beyond making the hard look easy, and walking forward, dusting themselves off and smiling cheerfully, despite all the things they can’t control. “Pierrot” samples Korean dance music legend Kim Wan Sun’s “Pierrot Laughs At Us” and references female artists who has shaped an era, including Kim Wan Sun, Uhm Jung Hwa, Lee Hyori, and IU. And LE SSERAFIM calls themselves “crazy girls of the new era.” “It feels really strange… After releasing “Ending Credit,” a new chapter of her life began.” As KIM CHAEWON mentioned while preparing the stage with Uhm Jung Hwa for the 2023 Weverse Con Festival, LE SSERAFIM could become “crazy girls” now because there were previous “Girls” who chased their own lightning in their own way and opened the doors of a new era. At this point, the “craziness” of LE SSERAFIM becomes not only the way they live the world, but also one of the ways women express themselves in this era. To smile cheerfully and move forward, despite the weather.

The album’s strong sound, a mix of hip-hop, EDM, and rock, shifts to a calmer pop ballad in the final song, “Crazier,” written by HUH YUNJIN. The lyrics that begin with “Wanna go crazy. But it’s too late, worried what others might think of me,” could represent LE SSERAFIM’s story before “CRAZY,” or they could express the feelings of those who, as the title suggests, haven’t quite reached their breaking point. Even if you love something enough to go crazy for it, when you look around, going crazy might feel like a luxury. Even when repeating “FEARLESS” in your mind, there are times when fear still creeps in, and shouting “EASY” doesn’t make the journey any easier. Similarly, even when wishing to go “CRAZY,” there are moments when it’s impossible to fully let go. However, they reflect on the lyrics from the title track “CRAZY,” where they sing, “Back in the days, the me that fell short of crazy,” and acknowledge that “Couldn’t go crazy in my youth,” but are “Still beautiful.” They celebrate both a life that can go crazy and a life that cannot, finding beauty in both. “If you love something beyond sanity, someday look back and see.” And as you pursue what you love, even the times when you couldn't go crazy leave something behind when you look back. “Two different people are fighting inside me,” “I don’t really know how to be happy”. Before the release of “CRAZY,” LE SSERAFIM faced moments in their documentary “Make it look easy” where they fell short of crazy. But even then, they missed their puppy. And now, they’ve reached the point where they can say, “Go for it.” Because they’ve learned to be crazy.
