The outfits the members of ENHYPEN wear add depth to the concert and are another way the group visually embodies their message. The last video shown during the concert suggests what’s to come and brings the MANIFESTO concert to a close. “Unlike other concerts,” Eum explained, “we wanted the final video to act as an outro to this tour and an intro to the next one.” Fittingly, the song that plays in the background is “Foreshadow,” the outro track off MANIFESTO: DAY 1. “Because MANIFESTO: DAY 1 declares the path the group wants to take moving forward with their fans, we chose to have them wear suits as we thought it would show their determination to walk their own path,” Heu Sae Ryeun, lead professional of ENHYPEN’s Visual Creative Team, explained. The video and their fashion choices within it expertly convey the concert’s overall message and build up excitement for how the story might unfold in the future.
“ENHYPEN debuted during the COVID-19 pandemic, so they haven’t had many opportunities to see their fans,” Heu said. “Since this is their first tour, I thought the designs shouldn’t be too over the top.” Heu went on to explain how the group’s image influenced the concert’s visuals, saying, “We wanted to express the narratives in the albums visually and focused on conveying that concept in a way that would be easy to follow.” Indeed, the group members do a number of costume changes so they can fully embody the story woven through their albums in a clear, concise way. For example, the boys wear blouses for a string of songs—“Drunk-Dazed,” “One In A Billion” and “FEVER”—released during the BORDER and DIMENSION series to reflect the vampire theme that was introduced in the albums. Heu said they focused on “emphasizing ENHYPEN’s unique vampire look” and chose burgundy blouses to make them look “bloodstained” when wet.
They also wore sporty clothes, a casual denim jacket and school uniforms, all to pull out from the members “the uniquely powerful and hip style of Gen Zers born in the 2000s” as seen with the group’s most recent album, MANIFESTO: DAY 1. “The members gave a lot of ideas about what we could do to make the clothing more impactful for our story,” Heu said, emphasizing that hair, makeup and costume choices were all made in conjunction with active talks with the ENHYPEN members. “I gave a lot of opinions on the visual aspects,” HEESEUNG said. “I gave them reference photos for my hair,” he revealed, adding, “I believe ENGENE can sense all the little ideas we worked on ourselves.” Each performance gives the audience a different viewing experience and the ENHYPEN members’ desire to put on a colorful show for ENGENE comes across wonderfully.
Just as ENHYPEN’s style choices embody the group, their choreography, too, brings the real-world expert dancers and the vampire characters together. “We made sure that the vampire vibe would come through with the nuances of the choreography,” Kim Seong Kwan, director of ENHYPEN’s performance directing team at BELIFT LAB, said about the first tour performance of “One In A Billion.” “And we felt like the song was already a message to fans, so we just made it possible to express that more dramatically.” The table used during the performance was reminiscent of a bloody vampire feast and was a key factor in making the performance more immersive. JAY noted “the song’s on the soundtrack to our original story DARK MOON: THE BLOOD ALTAR, so we tried to capture the mood behind its whole reason for having been made. We wanted to use all kinds of sets and props so the audience would feel like they’re watching a musical.” Kim said it’s clear “they use a lot of props if you look at the year-end performances they’ve done, so I trust them to do a good job with props,” adding that “the members watch out for each other and say things like, ‘Be careful on this prop—use it like this,’ communicating with each other a lot, which made the whole performance perfect.”
The intro to “FEVER,” another live first, is another fan favorite. “We wanted to really emphasize the vampire vibe with the collar-biting move,” Kim explained, adding how, “at the same time, we wanted the choreography to break away from their debut image and show how they’re maturing.” Their maturity not only lets them try bold new dance moves but has also allowed them to improve to the point that they can perform perfectly under any circumstance. This could be seen in the US leg of their tour especially, where limitations resulted in simplified stage design and they had to do some songs with nothing but their dance moves to fill the stage. The members actually said such conditions allow them to better show everything they had worked on and that it was an opportunity to put their true skills on display. They also said they were also incredibly grateful for all the ENGENE at the venues cheering them on and giving the group their full support.
4. ENGENE
ENHYPEN has shown steady improvement with each of their onstage performances. “I saw the way they can immediately process feedback and improve upon it by adding their own flare just one day later,” Eum said. “I could tell right away that they’re the kind of artists that people can expect a lot from.” SUNOO seemed to agree. “The more I perform, the more naturally I can adjust my own pace,” he said. “I felt a lot more relaxed performing on stage, and I think having all that eye contact with fans made me feel progressively more comfortable.” SUNGHOON, meanwhile, said he “was most surprised by the fans cheering. I felt overwhelmed when I heard that,” he said, adding, “I think I learn a lot from putting on concerts.” ENGENE has always been at the center of ENHYPEN’s capacity for change, allowing the members to grow every day. Closing the concert with “SHOUT OUT” is a sweet gesture toward this. During the song, ENHYPEN and ENGENE become “each other’s witness,” and as they sing, “Let’s shout out to the world,” the fans channel their undying support for and faith in the group in between cheers. With “SHOUT OUT,” ENHYPEN projects their voice out into the world, wear their hearts on their sleeves for ENGENE, and the concert comes to a close. Following the story laid out by the concert, the audience can see how far ENHYPEN has come to get to where they are today and take a peek at the future they have before them. “I hope, since this is our first tour, that ENGENE feels like we’re setting out on the journey for the future together,” JAKE said. “We have so many journeys to go on in the future.” ENHYPEN’s journey to share their story with the world has only just begun.
