It’s that time of year again when we all reflect on the past 12 months in our own way. For our part, Weverse Magazine will be taking a look back at how different artists and their tireless staff spent 2022 with fans. We’ll be publishing articles for three weeks as the members of the staffs behind BTS, SEVENTEEN, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, ENHYPEN, fromis_9 and LE SSERAFIM select their favorite music, videos, performances and other MOMENTs from working with the artists they support. This week we take a look at some of the performances these six groups have put on. For the final part of this series, we talk to Park So Yeon, LE SSERAFIMS’s performance director, to tell us all about “ANTIFRAGILE.”
Why “ANTIFRAGILE” is LE SSERAFIM’s best performance of the year
Park So Yeon (SOURCE MUSIC Performance Directing Team head): I feel a deep attachment to LE SSERAFIM’s debut song, “FEARLESS,” since it represented the group’s first step out into the world. But while we had to get that song ready with all our focus toward improving the quality of it in a short timeframe, for “ANTIFRAGILE” we were able to use that experience as a stepping stone and prepare more robustly. “ANTIFRAGILE” is about facing any and all hardship and difficulties that come your way and being stronger for them. But I don’t think the song’s about LE SSERAFIM saying they’re just strong and never going to break. The song and dance just express what the members of the group aspire to; it doesn’t mean they’re strong enough to get through everything without blood and tears. What we wanted to say more than anything else is that they’re “ANTIFRAGILE.” So for me, the biggest thing I wanted people to take away from this performance was realizing that LE SSERAFIM is the real deal. That was the core of the whole thing. I thought it was better to show their power through dance instead of just saying “this is our narrative” so that people could really feel how much LE SSERAFIM dominates the stage and how no other group can match their energy. Their goals for the future, their love of the stage, their desire to do well, their true energy—that’s the reality we wanted to get across in “ANTIFRAGILE.”

ANTIFRAGILE
Park So Yeon: There’s a part in the dance practice behind-the-scenes video for “ANTIFRAGILE” where EUNCHAE has trouble with her shoes. At the time I thought it would be good for her to try it once, so I told her to do it and then change her shoes after. But she kept at it till the end. Maybe she felt pressured into it because she has to start the song off in the center and the other members were rooting for her.
She kept practicing and eventually got it down. (laughs) Everyone’s familiar with that sense of accomplishment you can get from hard work. You get the courage to challenge yourself and reach for the next level from experience. It was cute seeing her so seriously happy after she pulled it off and it made me proud, too. (laughs) I always feel that way when they practice. It’s best if everyone catches on quickly and can do it well, of course, but I think the most important thing is how we treat each other when we can’t. The members are always patient with each other and if one of them can’t get something right they try it together. EUNCHAE couldn’t be on stage with the rest of them for the 2022 Fact Music Awards (TMA) because of COVID-19. She really wanted to do it and was so upset that she couldn’t. It made me feel awful. The other members had a video call with her while they were practicing and said, “We’ll do our best. Don’t worry.” They practiced the dance the same way and just left her spot empty. I remember they were saying, “Let’s pretend like EUNCHAE’s right here, just invisible. Let’s make her proud.” YUNJIN said she would do the dance break perfectly and practiced really hard. And it really was perfect. I’d like to give them all a round of applause for always doing their best no matter what situation they find themselves in.

Team LE SSERAFIM
Park So Yeon: When you’re having your picture taken, you usually get yourself into what you think the most attractive pose and angle would be. But there’s other charming things from other people’s points of view beyond what you yourself see. I think my job is to find those hidden charms. I always tell the members, “You have to draw from who you really are. Don’t fake anything.” I think I’m good at picking out all of their good points now that we’ve spent so much time together and I try and help each of them to convey those things. I met each of the members one-on-one first. KAZUHA took lessons from me when she was in the Netherlands, YUNJIN and EUNCHAE met me when they were trainees and I met CHAEWON and SAKURA separately before their debut and practiced dancing with them. The group came together when I was the only one who knew all five of them. I know the path each of them took and the challenges they faced, so I naturally came to know what each of them expresses well and what they’re good at doing. It wasn’t easy for them to come all together as a group like this. (laughs) What’s interesting is that, if you look at the five of them now, I think they all have similar strengths. It’s like when you pick a character in a game and they all have unique stats, but in the end, they’re all really good at fighting. That’s what LE SSERAFIM’s like.

How LE SSERAFIM proved themselves at MMA

Park So Yeon: We figured it was better to put proper emphasis on what kind of group LE SSERAFIM is rather than do something new just because it’s an end-of-year performance. Since it hasn’t been long since they debuted, we wanted the performance to be all about them. We started with trying to convey the idea of the Hydra to show how they’re “ANTIFRAGILE.” We split up the members’ individual parts of the dance based on when they speak in the song so people would focus on the lyrics. It also let the members express their spoken words through the way they move. I really think the words “I will rise over and over again” are so cool. I thought about how they could express this part—how they could speak through their movements. We tried to capture the sense of rising by having them bend back and use their core strength to slowly rise again and having them look really confident. We wanted to show them flying up after falling in the “the dance I dance as I fall” part. Falling and flying are two sides of the same coin, after all. We wanted to give the image of cool women who are always relaxed, and I think that part was really immersive even though it was short—maybe thanks to CHAEWON. SAKURA’s the Hydra’s leader in the dance break in the trailer. She was the first to come to mind when I pictured the Hydra’s leader, so I entrusted the role to her. To be honest, SAKURA’s been through a lot. During group practice, she kept practicing during break time until she was pouring sweat and could do all the moves. I was applauding her too when they finally put on the performance because I was amazed how good she made it look. She proved to me that I didn’t make the wrong choice. I think SAKURA’s greatest strength is her passion and the scorching energy she gets from it. It feels like the word “passion” doesn’t quite do her energy justice though. (laughs) All the members had a really strong desire and will to do a good job with this performance. I’m someone who thinks the more you practice, the better, so I don’t usually say things like this, but I even said, “Should we stop here and go home? When are we leaving?” (laughs) They put so much effort into this performance and I was really hoping they’d be able to convey that. I wanted the audience there in person to see how strong our performance is. So even though it was pre-recorded, we decided to go all out from the beginning till the end as if we were performing live. We also wanted people to focus solely on their dance, so we didn’t use any background videos or special effects. The members and the backup dancers all worked so hard to come together as Team LE SSERAFIM and get in sync so they could show off what they did. And the fact that the performance was acknowledged through winning Best Performance made me even prouder and more thankful. (laughs)

To our dear members

Park So Yeon: The LE SSERAFIM members are really sincere in their performances. I hope they never stop wanting to put on good performances. I think we’re still at the first step. Luckily we could show people a lot of things in taking this first step, but let’s not get too excited yet. (laughs) But anyway, you worked really hard and did a great job! (laughs) I want to tell them something like that. I just really like working with LE SSERAFIM. There were actually a lot of ups and downs while promoting “ANTIFRAGILE” but that made it all the more fun. (laughs) We all joked and said, “Yep—that’s LE SSERAFIM!” Sometimes you miss things when things go too smoothly. I think that sometimes you have to take a little detour so you can find your footing again and keep moving forward. I consider myself an ambitious achiever and the members are similar. They’re almost too ambitious and have a hard time walking away from anything. I couldn’t ask for more than being with artists who, like me, are so ambitious and want to do so many different things. There’s nothing better than that. I was talking with CHAEWON recently in the practice room and told her, “I think it’s really lucky that I met you five. It makes me so happy when I present the big picture I have in mind and you all keep an open mind and always do your best.” I think all the performances they’ve done so far were made possible because they’re LE SSERAFIM and they’re themselves. I’m honestly scared how far we’ll be able to go sometimes. Naturally I feel worried sometimes, but LE SSERAFIM will keep singing about themselves and I think all they need to do when they’re on stage is to show what they’re capable of. I hope people can see them for exactly who they are. When something’s hard, they say it’s hard, and they can admit to being the kind of people who make mistakes. We’re going to keep doing even better. We’re going to keep working even harder. We still have a long ways to go. (laughs)
