JISOO is a member of the world’s most famous girl group, BLACKPINK, an ambassador for Dior and Cartier, and has so much influence that a single upload to her Instagram can create a huge buzz. Clearly she’s the most popular singer, or even celebrity, in the world. But despite her high profile, there’s also a laid-back, everyday side to JISOO. She sticks with her favorite cartoon characters and games whether they’re in fashion or not and has her own unlikely philosophies on things. In her vlog, she comes across as a regular, everyday, honest person. The singer once described herself as “a rabbit with the shadow of a tiger” and if you get to know her better it’s clear that she’s not easily shaken on the inside. Here’s five tidbits to help you see JISOO in a more colorful light.

JISOO the influencer
JISOO has a staggering Instagram follower count of over 71 million (as of April 11) and all the likes and comments that come with it. She managed to crash Vogue France’s website when fans flocked to see the magazine’s cover, featuring an Asian woman for the first time. Fashion magazine WWD notes that Dior had the highest media impact value (MIV) of any brand at the Paris Fashion Week, with JISOO directly accounting for 23% of it. The Instagram post she made had 8.4 million likes as of April 11, translating to an MIV of $1.8 million. And it’s quite evident Dior loves JISOO back: Creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri said she was inspired by JISOO while working on her fall/winter collection. Dior designed the clothing JISOO wore for her solo performance during BLACKPINK’s stop in Paris for their BORN PINK tour, while Dior’s beauty boutique released a colored lip balm to mark the singer’s birthday in January. When JISOO was selected to be Cartier’s ambassador, it was speculated in the press that the two fashion giants offered JISOO competing advances on her contract to try and attract her—perhaps no surprise for a member of the most popular girl group in the world and one of the top influencers out there.

JISOO the vlogger

JISOO was the last among the BLACKPINK members to start her own YouTube channel, which she calls HAPPY JISOO 103%. Within 15 minutes of posting her first video, “LONDON vlog,” she already had over 100,000 subscribers. Ten hours later, that number jumped to one million, and the video had been watched 13.2 million times. As of April 11, over four million people subscribe to her channel. All the videos on HAPPY JISOO 103% so far show what the performer was up to in the downtime between concerts during BLACKPINK’s tour in Europe this past winter. The videos unfold the life of a hardworking, passionate artist—in London one day, Barcelona the next and Cologne soon after. Of course, there’s also the side of celebrity life where she has to take a charter flight between countries while on tour and have a bodyguard accompany her when she’s out in crowded tourist spots, but JISOO captures it all from her perspective with minimal editing. It makes for the occasional rough but candid moment, haphazard and shaky like a beginner’s vlog would be. Some shots give viewers a taste of the beautiful Christmas atmosphere in Europe, while scenes where she dines belie her true location since JISOO visits Korean restaurants or eats hot pot exclusively. We also get images of tourist life that should be familiar to everyone: wandering around with JENNIE to find some strawberry tanghulu at a market in Berlin, lining up for a popular photo spot and being turned away from a fully booked museum. JISOO’s videos also have a special charm thanks to her calming, kind energy as she quietly narrates her life. She said she named the channel HAPPY JISOO 103% because she “wanted everyone’s happiness index to increase while watching.” And no doubt you’ll find yourself involuntarily smiling if you watch, too.

JISOO the gamer
Gaming has been one of JISOO’s hobbies for a long time. She even has a dedicated room in her house for playing games on her PC. She’s known for having played Beggar Life, a mobile game that famously requires exceptional patience, for three years straight. Her influential status and her love of games have converged to give us the very first in-game K-pop concert in collaboration with PUBG MOBILE and JISOO also worked with KartRider Rush+ to create a character based on herself, design items and even provide voice acting. Among all the games she plays, JISOO is so into MapleStory that she describes it as an “old friend” and some of her most “meaningful memories”—and she’s been the game’s ambassador since last year. She’s especially serious about dressing up her character, bragging about how she “always make my character pretty and sit them somewhere nice,” and even receives matching items for her birthday. But it’s not just customizing her character that she’s serious about. JISOO says she works hard to level up because she wants to become “a perfect person inside and out” in everything she does. The fact that she’s joined a guild and trains on her own despite her already impressive level in-game is a reflection of who she is in real life. She continues to play what she finds fun whether the game’s in vogue or not. Whether it’s the games she plays or the collaborations she works on, she sticks with what she likes and she does it with all sincerity and with a smile. In her own words: “Prioritize having fun over winning!

JISOO, the rabbit with a tiger inside

In an interview with Cosmopolitan Korea, BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky director Caroline Suh describes JISOO: “It’s possible to look at JISOO and see someone gentle and underestimate her inner strength,” she said. “But she’s a really strong person.” JISOO is all smiles, but she’s also very strong on the inside. In the documentary, we learn that JISOO went on stage at the 2019 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival despite suffering from severe back pain. But in the same film, she explains how she channels her difficulties into stepping stones on a path toward improvement: “I think I figured out how to have fun on stage. Don’t concentrate on just yourself, but feed off this passion raging around you.” If she’s enjoying the moment, it means she’s completely focused on what she needs to do at any given time while also “not regretting or dwelling on the past” (Marie Claire Korea), which is closely related to when she’s called herself “a born hard worker” when interviewed (Marie Claire Korea), pinpointing her “biggest strength”: “never giving up, never feeling defeated and always trying hard and smiling” (Harper’s BAZAAR Korea). The reason she’s able to arrive at a place where she can speak so confidently to her consistent work ethic and acknowledge all the effort she’s put in is all the self-reflection she practices. In the end, JISOO thinks “everyone should create their own role model within themselves” (ELLE Korea), showing what she thinks true positive self-acknowledgement looks like. The kind of gentle exterior paired with inner strength that JISOO possesses is the most beautiful and powerful ability there is, and it belongs exclusively to those who really look at themselves and have passion for what they do.

JISOO the FLOWER
On March 31, JISOO released her first solo single album, ME. Leading up to the release were several versions of the album cover, different conceptual posters and also short films. Expectations ran high for the album, with teaser concepts ranging from the traditional to the stunning and JISOO pulling each one off effortlessly. All that excitement translated to impressive album sales in the end. The lead single, “FLOWER,” topped the iTunes Top Songs chart in 64 countries, including the United States, immediately after release. It also went up to an impressive number two on Melon’s TOP 100 chart. Meanwhile, it was number six on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs Global chart on the release date and the B-side, “All Eyes on Me,” was number 16. The physical album sold 870,000 copies on its first day and some 1.2 million in the first week, setting a new record for a solo female K-pop artist. ME also reached number two on the Billboard Global 200 chart dated April 15. People were as hooked on the visuals as they were the song itself. The music video for “FLOWER” is a grand-scale visual treat, like a moving photo book. JISOO, alone in a hotel or somewhere similar, becomes a flower, singing about her breakup and now “there was nothing left but a scent of a flower.” JISOO is dressed in purple when she sings of a “lilac” and then in white for the lyrics about a “white petal.” There’s a juxtaposition between expected and unexpected outfits: a classic image that just screams “JISOO” and a high-concept one made of intense reds and blacks. Along with the costume changes, every new shot introduces JISOO in unique eyeliner styles, colorful smoky makeup and finely detailed nail art to match. She remains the center of gravity throughout, trying on different images with ease; she moves in ways that suggest flowers and butterflies and she has great chemistry with the backup dancers; she sings mainly in Korean with her mid-range to deep vocals, making the song and video a feast for the eyes and ears. JISOO herself explained that she “wanted to show off something new and diverse while still being myself,” and indeed “FLOWER” is just as colorful and alive as JISOO herself, not some fragile flower. With a song, music video, interest in the album and her continuous winning streak as impressive as they are, maybe that’s exactly why JISOO named her album ME.
