Taylor Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department held onto the top spot on the chart for a second week in a row, driven by substantial sales of physical copies of the Anthology version and marking its 17th time at number one overall. Weekly sales came out to 240,000 units, with album sales accounting for 201,000 copies, or over 80% of the total. TTPD was also number one on the Top Album Sales chart for a 10th week, and it received over 51 million streams, equivalent to a sizeable 39,000 units. Since the Billboard 200 chart began in 1956, only 18 albums have spent 17 or more weeks at number one.
ROSÉ’s debut album, rosie, entered the chart at number three, with 102,000 units sold, marking the highest position ever achieved by a solo female K-pop artist. rosie moved 70,000 units, placing it at number three on Top Album Sales, while the album racked up 43.9 million streams, the 17th most of any album for the week. As a group, BLACKPINK hit number two with THE ALBUM in 2020 and number one with BORN PINK in 2022.
TWICE’s 14th mini album, STRATEGY, debuted at number four on the back of 88,000 units. It sold 81,000 copies, securing number two on Top Album Sales. STRATEGY was also streamed 8.9 million times, equivalent to 6,500 units. TWICE now holds six top-10 albums, first entering the upper echelons with their 2021 EP Taste of Love, which reached number six. Their highest-charting release to date was the EP With YOU-th, which went all the way to number one in March earlier this year.
Sabrina Carpenter now has two albums in the top 10. First, her chart-topping Short n’ Sweet, which spent four weeks at number one, sat at number five this week. Meanwhile, her holiday EP Fruitcake returned to the chart at number 10, becoming her second top-10 album. Fruitcake, a Christmas album, was originally released digitally and made available for streaming last November. Then, this December 6, it received a mass physical release—on CD, cassette, and vinyl—alongside the Netflix holiday special A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter. Weekly sales of Fruitcake reached 54,000 units, selling 39,000 copies and hitting 19.7 million streams, equivalent to 15,000 units.
Mariah Carey’s perennial hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” topped the chart for a 16th time, holding onto its position from last week. Sixteen weeks on the Hot 100 is the second best on record—a milestone shared with “One Sweet Day” (Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, 1995), “Despacito” (Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, Justin Bieber), and “Last Night” (Morgan Wallen). The all-time record belongs to “Old Town Road” and “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” both at 19 weeks. If Carey takes another week at the top during this holiday season, it would make second place exclusively hers and help her chances of toppling the ultimate record in the long term.
“All I Want” was streamed 47.7 million times this week and sold 6,000 copies. It went to number one on the Streaming Songs chart for a 20th week, tying champion “Old Town Road.” Sales surged thanks to the December 6 release of a 30th-anniversary edition on vinyl, cassette, and CD. On the artist level, Carey continues to reign supreme with a combined 95 weeks at number one on the Hot 100.
At number two this week was Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” The pair of Carey and Lee have now occupied the top two positions together for a record-breaking 13 weeks. The next closest is Shaboozey with “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and Post Malone and Morgan Wallen with “I Had Some Help,” at 11 weeks.
Holiday songs swept the top five this week, expanding their dominance over the top three from the previous week. Outside of holiday hits, the best-performing song was the Lady Gaga/Bruno Mars duet “Die With a Smile” at number six. Shaboozey’s “Bar Song” was number nine overall but held tight to its airplay crown. With 20 weeks at number one on the Radio Songs chart, “Bar Song” now has the second most weeks at the top of all time.
The V and Bing Crosby single “White Christmas” debuted at number one on Digital Song Sales and number 93 on the Hot 100. This follows on the heels of V’s success last week with “Winter Ahead,” a winter-themed collaboration with Park Hyo Shin. “White Christmas,” a duet between V and the late Bing Crosby, has been making waves. Posthumous duets have a notable history. Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole’s single “Unforgettable” from 1991 was a pioneering example, winning the Grammy for Song of the Year. Subsequent duets have featured the voices of Elvis Presley and Louis Armstrong, and more recently, Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse.
As holiday songs gain strength in the world of streaming at year’s end, contemporary songs by the likes of Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, and Ariana Grande are joined by timeless hits from artists like Brenda Lee, Dean Martin, and Nat King Cole. But as valuable as the classics are, they need updating to better align with modern tastes, which explains the release of A Sentimental Christmas with Nat “King” Cole and Friends: Cole Classics Reimagined in 2021, featuring duets with more modern singers like John Legend.
Bing Crosby’s estate shares the same view. They aim to ensure Crosby’s classics resonate every winter while also introducing his music to a younger global audience. It was this drive that sparked the collaboration between Crosby and V. V has never been shy about his interest in and love for jazz, and Crosby’s work is no exception, which the Crosby estate took notice of. Excitement online for their connection went beyond merely fans celebrating their “bias’ bias.”
After isolating Crosby’s vocals from his most suitable radio performance of “White Christmas,” the creation of an entirely new arrangement, and V recording his part right before beginning his military service, the project wrapped up with final mixing taking place in early 2024. And it was all kept under wraps until its release in November. It’s fair to say this wasn’t just about making a hit, but a whole new classic.
ROSÉ and Bruno Mars’ single “APT.” continues to dominate both the Global 200 and Global Excl. US charts, holding number one for eight consecutive weeks. The song sits at number 20 on the Hot 100, Streaming Songs, and Radio Songs charts, and number three on Digital Song Sales. This is the song’s fourth straight week on the Radio Songs chart, and it just keeps climbing. “toxic till the end” debuts at number 90 on the Hot 100, and “number one girl” enters at number 38 on the Global 200 and six on Bubbling Under Hot 100. Five other tracks off the album rosie debut on the Global 200 as well, ranging from number 151 to 198. The BLACKPINK member’s album debuts at number three on the Billboard 200, number 17 on Top Streaming Albums, and number three on Top Album Sales. ROSÉ herself is number four on the Artist 100 chart, her highest position to date.
STRATEGY, TWICE’s 14th mini album, debuts at number four on the Billboard 200 and number two on Top Album Sales, and the title track debuts at number three on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. TWICE returns to the Artist 100 chart at number five.
Jimin’s album MUSE hits number 128 on the Billboard 200. The track “Who” is number 43 on the Hot 100, number 30 on Streaming Songs, number 23 on Digital Song Sales, and number 24 on the Global 200. The BTS member is now number 85 on the Artist 100.
